Blending vs Juicing

Juicing has fast become one of my new favourites. It’s a great way to detox and give your body a nutritious kick. So which is better? Blending or juicing? Here is a summarised description of each method that I found in a great article by James Colquhoun at

Juicing extracts water and nutrients from produce and discards the indigestible fiber. When this is done, your digestive system doesn’t have to work as hard to break down the food and absorb the nutrients. The nutrients become more readily available in larger quantities than if you were to eat these fruits and vegetables whole. Fiber helps slow down the digestive process and gives your body a steady release of nutrients into the bloodstream. Freshly squeezed vegetable juices are ideal for detoxification because they are so nutrient rich and restore the body at a cellular level.

It is important to note that when you remove fiber from produce the liquid is absorbed into your bloodstream very quickly. If you just juice fruits, this could cause a rapid spike in blood sugar which can use mood swings, energy loss and more. Fiber is filling, so without it, you may find yourself hungry again quite quickly.

Unlike juicing, a smoothie consists of the entire fruit or vegetable, including the skin and fiber. The blending process breaks the fiber apart, making it easier to digest. Blood sugar spikes are avoided because when ingested because you have a slow, even release of nutrients into the blood stream. Smoothies are more filling because of the fiber and much quicker to make, making them a great on-the-go snack.

Things to remember:
1. It is best not to combine fruit and veg (unless it’s apple) as it can affect digestive enzyme function.
2. Try drink your juice or smoothie right away. Within 15 minutes light and air will begin to destroy the nutrients.

I will be uploading a great green immune booster juice and my current favourite smoothie recipe in my recipe page. Give them a try and let me know what you think!
